Rumi themed clothing: what fabrics and colours should be used?
September 13, 2025There’s no need to spend a fortune on a tailor or expensive fabrics to capture the spirit of Rumi’s ageless style. Using a bit of imagination, it’s possible to construct a Rumi inspired costume from clothing and accessories that achieve both an authentic and comfortable feel.
- Start With a Long Robe or Loose Outer Layer
See if you can find at home (or for a loungewear bargain at a thrift shop):
A bathrobe (neutral tones work best)
A long cardigan or kimono style jacket
A plain trench coat (without lapels)
Plenty of options on the internet as well. The key here is that all the robes flow, which forms the basis to the costume.
- Add a few more Layers for Extra Depth and Movement
Rumi’s style, while always simple, had a touch of grace and beauty brought about by layers. To achieve such a look:
Put on a plain long sleeved tunic or wear an oversized shirt which is then complemented by the robe
Add some wide legged pants, bottom yoga pants, or pajama style trousers for ease.
Whenever possible, use layers which have a contrasting length (inner layer shorter, outer robe layer longer) in order to add visual interest.
- Repurposed Scarves and Shawls
This costume is very much a work in progress as scarves can make all the difference. Grab a scarf or two, and one can be wrapped loosely about the shoulders, almost like a shawl.
Use a larger shawl as a belt or a sash tied around the waist. For headwear, fold a scarf into a turban style wrap for an instant transformation.
Play with Colors: Neutral vs. Jewel Tones
The choice of color can entirely alter the mood of the costume.
A Neutral palette (ivory, beige, taupe, soft gray) evokes simplicity and humility and is great for a more spiritual or reflective vibe.
With a Jewel tone (emerald green, sapphire blue, deep ruby, gold), the costume takes on a more rich and dramatic aura which works for performances on stage or during festivals.
If you are limited with options, you can wear some neutral colors with one jewel-toned scarf to get a more balanced look.
Optional Finishing Touches
If you belt the robe, you can use a simple leather belt to add some waist definition.
The look can be completed with some beads, prayer ropes, or even a small book of poetry as a prop.
The slippers or sandals are shoes that complete the look and make the costume easy to wear for the entire day.
With a robe, some scarves, and a thoughtful approach to layering, anyone can make a Rumi costume with no money spent at all. The elegance of this look is shown with flowing lines and soft simplicity, which is the parallel of poetry written by Rumi.
